First Year Guide to Red Scare

First Years:

On behalf of over 1300 members of Red Scare, the Red Scare Executive Board welcomes you to the University of Dayton.   This guide’s purpose is to orient the new student about what Red Scare, what we do, and how you can become a member of UD’s largest student organization.  If you have any questions after reading through this guide, feel free to contact us at red.scare@notes.udayton.edu, or visit our Meet the Board page to contact a member of the executive board.

So what is Red Scare?
The Dayton Flyers have rich tradition of athletic excellence which has been supported through the years by a powerful, influential, and spirited student body.  This student body is known as the Red Scare.  We are the large group of students who attend varsity athletic events to support their fellow Flyer athletes.  The sports we support include Men and Women’s Soccer, Football, Volleyball, Men and Women’s Basketball, Baseball, and Softball.

So how do I join?
You can officially join Red Scare, for free, by registering at http://www.udaytonredscare.com/register.php.  You will then begin receiving official Red Scare emails and have access to Red Scare Online features such as the forums and ticket exchange program.  It is also recommended that you purchase a Red Scare T-Shirt at the beginning of the fall season.  These are sold at Red Scare’s kick-off pep-rally, Red Out Rally.  Red Out Rally helps to increase the excitement for students and gives them an opportunity to get to know the Red Scare Executive Board, along with Flyer athletes and coaches.   You should then wear this shirt when attending athletic events.

Alright! So how do I attend these events?
The schedule for athletic events can be found several places:

The announcements and email notifications provided by Red Scare

Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Volleyball games are played here on Campus.  Soccer is played at Baujan field (located behind the Kettering Labs and the Humanities Building), and Volleyball is played at the Frericks Center (located across from Albert Emmanuel Hall).

Football, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball, and Softball games are all located at the UD Sports Complex across the Great Miami River.  Football is played at Welcome Stadium, Men’s and Women’s Basketball at the University of Dayton Arena, Softball at the UD Softball Stadium, and Baseball at Time Warner Cable Stadium.  Bus transportation will be provided to all officially supported games.  Keep an eye on Red Scare announcements and emails for details on buses.

Why should I attend these events?
Simply put, they are fun!  More students participate in Red Scare than any other organization on campus, and some events bring over 1000 students to the game!  As our slogan for this year goes, We don’t watch the game, We LIVE the game.  Aside from that, your attendance at these games will pay off later, as the most dedicated students will receive the best tickets for Men’s Basketball.  More info is listed below.

Well how much does it cost to attend these games?
Any student can attend any University of Dayton athletic event for free.  In general, seating at these games is determined in a first-come, first-serve basis.  Pre-purchase of tickets is not required;  simply present your student ID at the gate.  Men’s basketball games, however, carry a special policy.

So how do I get good seats at Men’s Basketball games?
Tickets for seats at basketball games are assigned through a system called Spirit Points.  The more Spirit Points you and your friends have, the better seats your group will have at basketball games.

Well how do I get Spirit Points?
Spirit Points are awarded to students who attend officially supported Red Scare events.  Students need simply to find the Red Scare Executive Board member holding the scanner in order to have their ID swiped.  The Board will then have that student’s ID recorded and will be able to award the appropriate number of points.  The number of points awarded varies per game, but in general, the following guidelines are followed:

10 Points: Men and Women’s Soccer, Men’s Basketball, Volleyball, Baseball, and Softball
20 Points: Football
30 Points: Women’s Basketball

Red Scare utilizes a system built by Ticketmaster ® to manage students’ Spirit Points.  Every member of Red Scare can log in to their Ticketmaster interface to view his or her points.

So how do I get Men’s Basketball tickets?
Members of Red Scare obtain tickets to Men’s Basketball games in groups.  In this way, students are assured that they will be able to sit next to their friends at games.   Students are welcome to obtain tickets in a single-person group, however.  Students will utilize the Ticketmaster® system to create joinable groups.  These groups will then be allotted tickets according to the group’s average Spirit Points.

Details regarding Men’s Basketball tickets will be distributed later.

How else can I get involved in Red Scare?
The Executive Board has a position specifically for incoming first year students, the Freshman Apprentice.  This position allows a first year student to see the ins-and-outs of UD Athletics and the Executive Board, and prepares him or her for future positions on the board.  They are the voice for the Freshman class, and help to gather interest and excitement amongst their classmates.

If you are interested in becoming the Freshman Apprentice, Red Scare will be taking applications in mid-September and short, informal interviews will be held towards the end of the month.  Look for e-mails and other announcements for more information.

Is there anything else I should know?
Be passionate.  Flyer Athletics and the Red Scare have deep traditions that rely on the interest and enthusiasm of the students.  By being present and loud in numbers, the Flyer Faithful can be an incredible influence on a game.

Stay up to date.  Red Scare update emails are essential to staying current with upcoming events, changes to the schedule, and any special events or information that could be important.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions or give us your feedback.  In fact, we welcome any feedback, positive or negative.  The Red Scare Executive Board will be happy to listen to any questions, comments, or issues you may have.
