-THE UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON'S LARGEST STUDENT ORGANIZATION-
2007-2008
blog from the board
April 13, 2008
Bubba Stoff, President
Greetings Red Scare,
I am excited to announce that the 2008-2009 Executive Red Scare Board is easily the most talented and ambitious board in the history of this organization. Period. This board is the equivalent of Brian Roberts, Roosevelt Chapman, Don May, Hank Finkel, and Jim Paxson all playing on the same basketball squad. The board is THAT talented. Please click the “officers” tab on our website for more information about each of the officers.
Unlike previous years in which board members were elected into position by popular vote, the officers were hand-selected out of a massive applicant pool. These fresh faces have many ideas and are ready to make Red Scare even better. Certainly, the new board has some huge shoes to fill after an incredible 2007-2008 season; however, I am 110% confident in saying that next year will be better! Bigger crowds, more special events, customized cheers, organized e-mails, and additional multimedia website content are some things on our agenda.
Thank you for your loyalty and your dedication in making Red Scare the premier organization on the University of Dayton campus, and one of the most infamous student fan sections in all of college athletics. Please continue your support for the Flyers as we prepare ourselves for glorious future.

Game Thoughts with Jim Saywell…
from
the Table of Life
And welcome back to Game Thoughts with Jim Saywell, from the Table of Life. Today, we have a special edition of game thoughts. Instead of broadcasting from the Table with a video feed, I am laying here typing all of my fans a blog message from that same table. I have been told by a close family member that they don’t want to see me lying down on a table on the internet (it begs some questions of my ultimate purpose), so I have reverted to writing you my thoughts. I can assure you fans (and you mother), that my ultimate purpose is NOT to dabble in “online videos” but instead to inform the Flyer Faithful with the great depth of knowledge that is Game Thoughts with Jim Saywell. This week is also special because I will not only be previewing one game, but I will be giving you my thoughts on the entire A-10 tournament and on your Dayton Flyers chances of making the NCAA tournament.
So, here we are: its championship week, the March madness has begun, and your Dayton Flyers are alive. We definitely still have work to do, but for the first time in recent memory, we have a legit shot at making the field of 65. Before I go more into the Flyers tournament resume, let me first talk some A-10 basketball. To view a tournament bracket, follow this link so you will not be lost: http://atlantic10.cstv.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/atl10/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/mensbracket. The Flyers start their tourney run by facing the slus from SLU. We are 2-0 against Saint Louis this year and I am very confident that we will make it 3-0 after that game. Not only do we have stars like B-Rob, MJ, and Big Kurt, but has anyone ever heard of a guy named Chris Wright? Well, if anyone remembers the freshman phenom, you will be very excited to hear that Dayton Daily News reports that he will be dressing for the tournament. This just adds to the momentum that we have built by winning 3 straight (2 on the road). I expect the Flyers to roll over SLU.
As Young Jeezy once asked, “And then what?” Well, and then we get the Muskies from down in Cincy. I hear people talk around campus like they are mad that we face XU so early, and I ask why are you mad? There is no reason to be! X***** is without their best player, Drew Lavender and Stanley Burrell just cried in a recent loss to St. Joes. Yes, a 21 year old “manly” basketball player CRIED because he lost. Aww, I feel SO sorry for him… Well, keep those tears coming Stan because I got news for you, DAYTON IS COMING TO PLAY! I can honestly say that I expect that the Flyers to beat X***** on Thursday at noon. After we upset top 15 team, we will most likely play St. Joes or Richmond. My guess is that St. Joes will beat the Spiders, so then we have to beat St. Joes. I don’t think that this will be a problem because of the momentum after beating XU and because of the newfound intensity of the Flyers. If all goes to plan, this will bring the Flyers to the championship. On the other side of the bracket, my guess is that UMass comes out and we have to beat them to get an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. This won’t be easy, but I think it can easily happen.
We might not need to be an at large team to the
NCAA tournament, but just in case, let’s review our tournament resume. We have
enormous wins at Louisville and versus Pitt that other teams in our place do not
have. We had an awesome non-conference record and we came on strong at the end
of the year. If Chris Wright can come back and looks good playing with the
Flyers, we will get even more consideration. However, what I think it will come
down to is if we can beat Xavier in the second round of the A-10 tournament. If
we do, I think that we will get the nod because that is yet another huge win for
us. Especially if we make the finals, I think that the Flyers will squeak their
way into the tournament as long as we beat XU. If we don’t, then we will
certainly be a top seed in the NIT tournament and it will still be fun to watch
Flyer postseason basketball. However, I hope and think that it won’t come to
that: I truly believe that the Flyers will make the tournament by having an
incredible non-conference record, having Chris Wright come back and look
amazing, and by beating XU in the second round of the A-10s.
As always, Go Flyers!
Sincerely yours,
Jim Saywell

As I made my journey this week through out our beautiful Campus and I
saw foot prints in the snow that predicted everything we need to know.
I saw this as I walked by the back of the Rec Plex, like God was telling
me a story just like footprints in the sand. What God said to me in the
snow met everything because I am UD Red Scare member and committed UD
fan. As God said in bold letters, “UD Beat Xavier” it met everything to
me. Then as I continued into the Ghetto streets, I saw it filled with UD
SPIRIT and it over filled me with joy.
On Saturday night, I heard load music playing at Art Street Amphitheatre and I had to join in on the fun. As I walked into the Pep Rally, I felt the vibe of the audience, as they were screaming our willingness to triumph over Xavier. As I was watching the Pep band getting the party started with the dance team dancing on the “fresh cat litter” on the concrete and BG giving his speech just might complete this week. So you would think……
“NOT”
I remember last year, one thing that had happen before the game to show that UD still had HEART for BASKETBALL and that is THE MARCH. I can recall drinking several cups of “APPLE JUICE” before this game and joining over three hundred plus students for the great parade down Stewart St. So come show that UD still has Heart, and join Red Scare for this great March into Victory against Xavier!
THIS GAME COULD MAKE THE
DIFFERENCE OF US BEING IN THE NIT OR THE
NCAA!
So all I have to say today Victory is in Our Hands.

Finished. Done. Hopeless. Right now, most people around UD men’s basketball probably feel that this is where the team sits with 5 games remaining in the regular season. However, I feel that this season still has a great amount of hope, and that there is still a very high possibility that this season could turn out like all of us were expecting just 5 weeks ago. My reasoning? Look at our tournament resume:
Overall Record: 17-7 (5-6)
Away Record: 4-5
RPI: 23
Strength of Schedule: 19
Good wins:
@ Louisville (#15 RPI)
Pitt (#18 RPI)
Rhode Island (#25 RPI)
Temple (#60 RPI)
In addition to this, look at the possibilities. The remaining away games are against the bottom of the barrel A-10 teams….RPI #214 La Salle, #156 Fordham, and #261 St. Bonaventure. Winning these three games will bump our away record up, and make our resume much more appealing. Our home games also give us a lot of hope, as two wins over RPI #43 St. Josephs and #12 Xavier would add two more “Good wins” and improve our resume.
So, I still have a lot of faith for this UD team. Add into this the hope that Chris Wright returns in time for the A-10 Tournament, and a deep run into the A-10s and the NCAA’s are a very deep possibility.

My all-time favorite movie is
The Shawshank Redemption starring Morgan Freeman as “Red” and Tim Robbins
as “Andy Dufresne.” If you have never seen it, I advise that you go watch it
immediately because of its gripping story, stellar acting, and its beautiful
message of “hope.” Hope. Currently, hope may be the one thing the University
of Dayton and Red Scare is lacking. The women’s basketball team ended their
record-breaking winning streak, and the men’s team lost two key players to
injuries, in addition to losing three straight. Being loyal to the red and blue
requires one to not give up hope. These incredible seasons are far from being
over, and the small bumps in the road we face will test the veracity and
tenacity of the teams we love. The future may look bleak, but you, Red Scare,
must spearhead the University of Dayton community in keeping hope alive. Who
knows what awesome things are in store for these two teams? Hope. Surely, Andy
Dufresne never lost his hope in Shawshank State Prison, and, well, we all know
what happens to him…

Red Scare, although this past week has not been a good one to the Flyers, do not give up yet. If you haven't heard, not only is Chris Wright hurt, but we found out that Charles Little will also be missing time after breaking his foot during the UMass game. Even though we lost to UMass, I am not worried because UMass is a top 30 team, and I would rather lose to them than a La Salle or St. Bonaventure (which are bottom feeders in the A-10). Also, although our women’s basketball team's winning streak came to an end, they will bounce back this Tuesday.
We all know that if this had happened to Xavier, their fans would give up, but we are not Xavier and we don’t give up. With the two key injuries it is time for someone on the men’s team to step up. The two players that I think are going to start to play a bigger role are Thiago Cordeiro and Devin Searcy. Also, expect some rotation changes, one possible lineup would be Kurt at center and Thiago and Devin rotating at the power forward spot. This time will not be easy, but over the next 2 weeks we are going to discover this team’s identity.
Playing _avier Thursday in Cincy, I expect a close game that will come down to the wire. The Flyers will finally break their road winning streak against X, even though we are down 2 players. My predication: Brob 25 points, Marcus 18 points, and Kurt with 16 points and 12 rebounds, Thiago with 8 points 9 rebounds. Flyers Win 75-71. Check it out on CSTV, or on the radio at 1290 AM or 95.7 FM.

I have a sneaky feeling that no UD student will ever surpass my total Spirit Points in Red Scare history after this holiday break. After pursuing the massive tool-filled aisles of the Home Depot, I scurried to the cash registers to make my holiday purchases. Upon entering the queue, I noticed a familiar object in the cashier’s hand. I squinted my eyes for a better look at this yellow object. Could you believe, it was the exact same scanner that Red Scare uses to scan your ID cards at sporting events! My eyes darted to the other cashiers who too held the powerful scanning device. Huzzah, I thought. Not only will I be making a great gift purchase, but I will earn Spirit Points as well. After patiently waiting my turn, I finally made it to the cashier with my products in one hand and student ID in the other. The cashier kindly rang up my products, swiped my credit card, and bagged my gifts. Beaming, I extended him my University of Dayton student ID. Here is our conversation:
Me: This is so exciting! I never knew Red Scare members received points for shopping at the Home Depot.
Cashier: Excuse me?
Me: How many points do I get for shopping today? Is it based on how much I purchase? Or does it revolve around what products I buy?
Cashier: Son, I’m afraid I have no idea what you are talking about.
Me: You know, Spirit Points? Red Scare? UD? You have the scanner right there.
(Cashier slowly looks at scanner and then slowly looks at me)
Cashier: Uh, right. Okay.
Me: So how many spirit points do I get?
Cashier: Uhhh, a million?
Me: No way! I am going to have the best seats, ever! Thank you, sir!
Go ahead; be jealous of me and all of my points. Even though the Home Depot does have the same scanners, I am now a little suspicious on their scanners’ ability to actually give one million Spirit Points. Oh well, if I do not earn a million Spirit Points, I won’t be too bummed. At least our men’s basketball team is nationally ranked in the top 25. That’s pretty okay, I guess…

The entire Red Scare board
One would think after a wildly successful fall season AND
a 9-1 start to men’s basketball AND a 10-2 start to women’s basketball, Red
Scare and the University of Dayton community would be pretty satisfied this
holiday season. For the most part, we are; however, there are a few more things
the Red Scare executive board is hoping for this Christmas…
- A date with
B-Rob
- To beat Xavier in every sport known to mankind
- For the march to the arena before the Xavier game to become a tradition and
known nation-wide
- For Red Scare to win ESPN's Craziest/Most dedicated fans award
- To have the Dayton fans beat the number of Xavier fans on the Facebook
application
- For Anheuser-Busch to recognize the fans at UD Arena as “Real Men of Genius”
- To own Pitt
- An NCAA berth in men's & women’s basketball
- To win some of those delicious Lee’s Double Dippers during timeouts
- To go undefeated at home...forever...in
all sports
- To have Dr. Dan body paint with the body painters for the Xavier game
Have a safe and happy holiday, everyone!!!

Adam Uthe, Executive Assistant
Oh to be a Flyer right about now! My
name is Adam Uthe and I am the Executive Assistant for Red Scare this
year. I am a sophomore Sport Management major and I could not be more
proud of every single one of our fall sports teams.
On Saturday the Women’s Volleyball team defeated Rhode
Island in a 3 game sweep to clinch its 4th A-10 Regular
Season Championship in as many years and a #1 seed in the upcoming
conference tournament at Charlotte. Also on Saturday, the team
recognized 3 outstanding seniors who played their final home match of
their careers. Adrienne Green, Robynne Green, and Jaime-Lee Richards
were honored during a pre-game ceremony. I would like to personally
thank everyone who attended the match to recognize these amazing players
who have brought nothing but success to the program during their time at
UD. Let’s hope Dayton is selected as a 1st/2nd
Round site for the NCAA tournament so that they can have one more
opportunity to play in front of the greatest volleyball fans in the
nation! I’d like send out one last thank you to the entire volleyball
team as well as the 1,838 fans in attendance on Thursday night for
completing the sweetest, most satisfying victory over a certain team
that starts with an X and sports a blue blob as its mascot!
Also on Saturday, the Flyer Football team defeated Drake
34-27 and got a little help from rival San Diego to earn a share of the
Pioneer Football League. This is the 9th time the Flyers have
clinched at least a share of the title in the league’s 15 year
existence. The team will host the Gridiron Classic bowl game on December
1st at Welcome Stadium and will play the winner the Northeast
Conference title game (Albany/Central Connecticut State). Not only has
the team been successful on the field, but they have also earned some
prestigious honors from within the classroom. 8 Flyers were named to the
2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District IV Team. Now let the countdown to the Gridiron Classic
begin!
Despite a penalty kick shootout loss to #2 seeded Fordham in the A-10 tournament, the women’s soccer team had an outstanding season. Keeper Niki Reed and forward Mandi Back earned the A-10 Defensive and Offensive Player of the Year awards, respectively. Colleen Gibson was named first-team all conference, Kelly Blumenschein made the all-rookie Team, and Amanda Gallow earned academic all-conference honors. The Lady Flyers finished the season with just 2 losses at home all season, a solid reflection on you the fans who Baujan Field such a dangerous environment!
Finally, our Men’s Soccer team capped off its season with a 6-1 beat down of Duquesne to earn its 10th win of the season and the 6th and final seed in the conference tournament thanks to some outside help. The Flyers will play Thursday at 8PM against UMASS who won the regular season matchup 3-0. Let’s get out there in full support Thursday and keep the Men’s unbeaten streak at Baujan Field going by giving the Minutemen a verbal assault they’ll never forget…after all, you don’t want ANOTHER New England team to succeed do you?!
October 15, 2007:
Keith Scanlon, Promotions Manager
Hey everyone, I’m Keith Scanlon and your Promotions Manager for the Red Scare. I am a freshman this year at UD and loving it! This year all of our sports teams are doing great mainly due to all the fans who come out and support our teams here at UD. I hope everyone had a good break this weekend and if you haven’t heard, our volleyball team won over the weekend. They beat George Washington in three games to have a record of 20-0. Our volleyball team is ranked 14th in the nation.
Not only is our volleyball doing an amazing job, but also our football team is 6-1 with a win last weekend over Davidson. Our men’s soccer team is doing well with a record of 6-2-2. The women’s soccer team is doing great with the support of all the fans. Their record is 11-3-0, with a record of 5-1-0 in the Atlantic 10. With all of our sports team doing amazing, the coaches thank us very much. The coaches have recognized you, the fans of the Red Scare on the radio, in the Flyer News, and more.
During the last week UD held the "Celebration of Flyer Basketball," which was a huge success. Bob Knight was there to speak to the former and current basketball players, along with all the fans. Not only was Bob Knight there, but also Jay Bilas, an ESPN College Basketball Analyst, who is the best, in my opinion, one of the best sports commentators ever. Along with those two, were coaches of Flyer Basketball, past and present. Our All-Time Winningest Coach at UD spoke, Don Donoher, and our present coach, Brian Gregory. Many of the former basketball players at UD were at the event, which was a great tribute to all those involved with Flyer Basketball.
Although there are only two women’s soccer games this week, we still need the support of the fans and Red Scare. One of the women’s soccer games is on Friday at 7:30 against St. Louis. The other game is on Sunday at 1:00 against Charlotte. We need all of your support to help to team easily beat these opponents. Our women’s volleyball team takes on Xavier away at 7:00 on Friday. Let’s hope that our team goes on to 21-0 and beats that team that starts with and X. Finally, our voucher sales will be going on this weekend for the basketball seating. Flyers will be poster around campus to keep you all informed about what is happing with this event that is going to be HUGE!!!!!!
September 18, 2007:
Jim Saywell, Freshman Liaison
It is great to be a Dayton Flyer! My name is Jim Saywell and I am the
Freshman Liaison to the Red Scare. These are some exciting times for
the Red Scare and for Dayton Flyer athletics. We have some truly
incredible sports teams this fall. Starting off with possibly the most
exciting, Dayton Volleyball has shocked the nation with its best start
in school history. In the most recent poll, Dayton is ranked number 18
in the nation which is the program’s best rank ever. After starting the
season with no votes, the Flyers have flown into the top 20 with 426
votes. Our biggest victories have come against then #17 Purdue, Utah,
North Carolina, and Illinois. This weekend, we need to support our
volleyball team when they open their A-10 season Friday at 7 pm with a
game against rival Saint Louis University and then Saturday at 5pm
against Duquesne. SLU was picked to win the A-10, and may be our
toughest opponent within the conference.
This weekend holds more than just volleyball however. On Friday night at 7:30, our women’s soccer team, off to a great start at 5-2, takes on rival Xavier in their opening A-10 match. Let’s start off the rivalry right with a HUGE crowd and a huge win over the Muskies. They play again on Sunday at 1 pm so that’s two chances to see our exciting women’s soccer.
Men’s soccer and football are both off to great starts as well. Soccer is 3-1-1 and is undefeated at Baujan Field. Wish them well as they travel to Butler and Belmont over the weekend. Flyer Football has been dominated its opponents in the first 3 weeks of the season with two 40 point wins at home. They take on the Fordham Rams this Saturday in the Bronx.
Red Scare has been extremely successful so far this year. We have gotten praise from coaches, turned out record crowds at the athletic events, and have helped the Flyers establish true home field or home court advantage. The fall athletic teams are a combined 10-1 at home this year and this is largely in part to the Red Scare. So come out this weekend in strong numbers. Let’s make Xavier never want to come back. Let’s let the A-10 know that they have no chance against the powerhouse Flyer volleyball team. Let’s let the nation know that we are for real. Let’s keep it up and help give Flyer athletic teams the reputation of having the best teams and the best fans in the nation! Go Flyers!
